Kia has just signed a lease for the US for $8.2 billion.
It’s a $1 billion deal for the company to run the Kia brand in the country for at least 20 years, and Kia is also selling its brand to the Chinese government for $50 billion.
Kia’s acquisition of the Optima brand was announced on December 19, 2019, and it’s the largest-ever acquisition for the global automaker.
Kia bought the Optimas brand in 2012 and the Optiases brand in 2015.
The company had been planning to acquire the Optimum brand, but the deal was put on hold after President Xi Jinping made a show of wanting to buy the entire automaker, which was valued at $2.7 trillion.
In 2019, the government announced a ban on Chinese-owned companies from owning any of the automaker’s brands.
However, Kia’s purchase of the brand was never finalized, and the automakers was unable to work out a deal.
Kias CEO Bob Ligouri said in a statement that the company would be moving to an entirely new and entirely different strategy, including focusing on growing its own business and working with other local and foreign companies.
Ligouri added that the plan is for the Optimal brand to be renamed Optima and for the brand to become a strategic partner in the future.
He said that Kia plans to invest in its own local businesses in the US, adding that the brand will remain active as well.
“We’re committed to the local communities that support us, and we’ll continue to invest here at Kia in support of local communities and continue to grow Kia,” Liguros statement said.
“In addition, the brand is also part of a broader strategic plan to improve Kia and build on our current strengths in health care, financial services, manufacturing and logistics.”
Kia has been in business for almost a century, but it has seen its share of problems over the years.
In 2018, Kias first US contract was for a $2 billion contract to operate the KIA brand in Atlanta, Georgia, which expired in 2022.
The contract was due to expire at the end of 2022, but Kia was able to secure a renewal in 2019 for the next 5 years.
Kias US-based leasing arm, Optima, also signed a contract to manage the company’s brand in Florida.
In 2020, the company announced that it had reached a $5 billion deal to buy all of Kia Americas’ brands and operate the brand there for 10 years.
That deal was extended for another 5 years in 2021 and a further 2 years in 2022, meaning Kia had to keep the brands in Florida under its existing contract, even though Kia already had a fleet of Optima vehicles there.
Kies brand also sold to Fiat Chrysler Automobiles in 2018, and in 2020, Kies announced that its brand had sold its entire fleet of brands to Fiat in 2019.
The company’s financials for the past three years were not much different from its financials from the previous two years.
The US business posted revenue of $1.4 billion and net income of $2 million.
It said it was in a strong position financially in 2021, with earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization coming in at $1,541 million.
The outlook for 2021 was negative, but there were positives.
For 2021, the business said it expects earnings of $732 million, which is up 4% from the year before.
KIAS also reported a $14 million loss for the year, which it attributed to a lower-than-expected increase in its operating costs.
The US company has struggled to attract consumers and businesses in recent years, but Liguba has said that the strategy is working.
KIA is in a good position financially, Ligura said, adding, “the world is changing.”
