Kia Motors’ Optima hybrid battery will go on sale in September, and the automaker said it would deliver on its promise of “100 miles of fully electric range per day.”
Optima, which has been the subject of some scrutiny by environmentalists and car owners, is a hybrid powered by a lithium ion battery pack that has been used in cars such as the Tesla Model S and Range Rover Defender.
The Optima car will offer customers the choice of a 1,500-kilowatt-hour battery pack or an optional battery pack of up to 1,300 kilowatt hours.
Kia said the Optima’s battery pack is compatible with other models of the same vehicle.
“We want to offer customers an excellent choice between the best electric range and the best battery,” Kia Chief Executive Officer Robert Roussel said in a statement.
“With this new Optima, Kia will offer the best of both worlds: an excellent range of 100 miles per day, plus the best price for the most battery.
Optima will also allow us to offer a range of electric vehicles with higher range than the current electric vehicle offerings.”
This new battery will also offer a competitive price point with the best EV range of the year.
“Kia said it will offer three models of Optima Hybrid: the Optimal, the Optimum II and the Optimist, all with the same 1,000 kilowatts of energy storage.
The battery packs will be available in two configurations, with a maximum of five Optimists and four Optimises.
Kia Motors is planning to make Optima the first hybrid vehicle in North America to offer the ability to charge from a USB cable or USB hub, the company said.
Kianan Bocanegra, Kias Vice President of Product Development, said in the statement that the Optimes new battery “provides the highest level of range and charging capabilities of any electric vehicle we have tested and have tested to date.”
Kias Optima Battery will go into mass production in September.
Kia also said the company will launch a new Optime Hybrid in the U.S. and China.
It said the new Optimime will go in to mass production by the end of this year and will be priced at about $1,000 less than the Optime II.
The Optimimime is designed to be a compact EV for drivers who want a compact range for the price.
